June Teufel Dreyer is Professor of Political Science at the University of Miami, where she has served since 1979, including as Department Chair from 2001 to 2004 and Director of the University Honors Program in 2003-2004. She earned a B.A. in Political Science from Wellesley College in 1961, an M.A. in East Asian Studies from Harvard University in 1963, and a Ph.D. in Government and Far Eastern Languages, a joint degree, from Harvard University in 1973. Dreyer also holds certificates of proficiency in Chinese from Yale University Summer Language Institute and in Japanese from Doshisha University. Prior to her current position, she was Senior Far East Specialist at the Library of Congress (1978-1979), Associate Professor at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio (1975-1978), and held visiting and teaching roles at the University of British Columbia and Harvard University. From 2001 to 2006, she served as Commissioner on the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, appointed by the Speaker of the House.

Dreyer teaches courses on China, U.S. defense policy, and international relations of East Asia. Her research focuses on Chinese politics, minority nationalities, Sino-Japanese relations, and U.S.-China security issues. She is the author of several influential books, including China's Political System: Modernization and Tradition, now in its 11th edition (Routledge, 2023); Middle Kingdom and Empire of the Rising Sun: Sino-Japanese Relations Past and Present (Oxford University Press, 2016, updated paperback 2018); and China's Forty Millions: Minority Nationalities and National Integration in the People's Republic of China (Harvard University Press, 1976). She has edited volumes such as Chinese Defense and Foreign Policy (Paragon House, 1989) and Taiwan in the Tsai Era: Challenges and Opportunities (Routledge). Dreyer has received the University of Miami Faculty Senate’s Distinguished Scholar award (2017), the Japan Institute for National Fundamentals award for best book of 2016 (2017), and served as President of the American Association for Chinese Studies (2018-2021). She is a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, member of the International Institute of Strategic Studies, and serves on the Board of Editors for the Journal of Contemporary China.
