About Justin

Professor Justin Yeung is the Head of the Department of Surgery, Melbourne Medical School – Western Precinct, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne, where he holds the Chair of Surgery, Western Precinct. He serves as a consultant colorectal surgeon in the Colorectal Unit at Western Health and is Co-Founder and CMO of PredicTx Health. Yeung graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BMBS and holds a DM, Postgraduate Diploma in Medicine, Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in General Surgery (FRCSEd Gen Surg), and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). He completed general surgical and colorectal specialist training in Nottingham, followed by a pelvic floor fellowship in Sheffield, United Kingdom. Awarded the HCA International Foundation Scholarship, he undertook a specialist colorectal cancer fellowship at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne from February 2009 to January 2010. Subsequently, he worked as a consultant colorectal and pelvic floor surgeon at University Hospitals of Leicester from 2010, receiving the honorary title of Senior Lecturer from the University of Leicester in 2016. In 2017, he joined the University of Melbourne as Head of the Department of Surgery at Western Health.

Yeung's research specializations include colorectal surgery, artificial intelligence applications in radiomics and body composition analysis, chemotherapy toxicity prediction, sarcopenia, myosteatosis, and perioperative care optimization. He leads the Department of Surgery AI Radiomics group at Western Precinct and chairs the Education Committee for the Department of Surgery, University of Melbourne, promoting clinical education through online materials development. His innovations include AI algorithms for precise chemotherapy dosing to reduce adverse reactions, culminating in PredicTx Health, which received $500,000 from the University of Melbourne Genesis Pre-Seed Fund. Key publications encompass 'Utilisation of intramuscular and intermuscular fat to develop a new skeletal muscle grading score which can predict treatment outcomes for locally advanced rectal cancer' (2026), 'Prognostic impact of myosteatosis on postoperative outcomes and survival in colorectal cancer: a systematic review' (2026), '3D Body Composition and Artificial Intelligence—A Novel Tool to Assess Sarcopenia and Predict Postoperative Outcomes in Emergency Abdominal Surgery' (2025), and 'Artificial intelligence generated 3D body composition predicts dose-limiting toxicity in metastatic colorectal cancer' (2025). With 188 publications cited over 2,500 times, his contributions advance cancer treatment outcomes and surgical practices.
