Justus Hallam serves as Associate Professor of Kinesiology and department chair at Cornell College, a position he has held since joining the faculty as Assistant Professor in 2016. He earned a Ph.D. in Kinesiology and Immunobiology from Iowa State University in 2012 and a B.S. from the same institution. Prior to his appointment at Cornell College, Hallam taught at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania. In his teaching role, he offers a range of courses in kinesiology, including Systems Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Lifetime Fitness and Activity, Nutrition, Exercise Testing and Prescription, and Foundations in Kinesiology.
Hallam's research examines the interactions between physical exercise, immune function, stress, sleep, and vaccination responses. Key publications include "Exercise after influenza or COVID-19 vaccination increases serum antibody without an increase in side effects" (Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, 2022), "Exercise Improves Host Response to Influenza Viral Infection" (PLoS ONE, 2015), "Antibody and CD8+ T cell memory response to influenza A/PR/8/34 vaccination" (Journal of Applied Physiology, 2013), and reviews on alkaloids and herbal supplements' effects on athlete immune function, such as Echinacea and bloodroot extracts. His 18 research works have garnered over 200 citations. At Cornell College, he directs student-led summer research projects, including studies on pre-workout supplements' impacts and performance analysis for volleyball players.
