About Jutta

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jutta Arens is Full Professor and Chair of Engineering Organ Support Technologies in the Department of Biomechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering Technology of the University of Twente, a position she has held since November 2019. She also holds an appointment at the TechMed Centre. Her research focuses on the development of artificial organs, including artificial lungs (oxygenators), heart assist devices, kidney replacement technologies, and integrated lung-kidney assist devices, with emphasis on miniaturization, hemocompatibility, long-term stability, and applications for neonatal and pediatric patients such as the artificial placenta system NeonatOx.

Prior to joining the University of Twente, Arens served as acting head of the Department of Cardiovascular Engineering at the Institute of Applied Medical Engineering, RWTH Aachen University, where she established the Artificial Lung Technologies group. She studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University, specializing in plastics technology and medical engineering, and completed her PhD there on a heart-lung machine for neonates with congenital heart defects. Arens contributes to international standards development through roles in ISO/TC 150/SC 2/WG 4 on extracorporeal circuits and NEN standards committees. She serves on editorial boards for Perfusion and Transplant International, and holds committee positions with EuroELSO and the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery. Her work includes numerous peer-reviewed publications on topics such as gas exchange in oxygenators and standardization of in-vitro evaluation methods for extracorporeal life support devices.
