About Kamila

Kamila Deavers, Ph.D., serves as Assistant Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Physical Sciences at Marian University. She earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry and Technology in May 2007 through a joint program at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague, in the Czech Republic, and the Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen. Her doctoral thesis examined the potential utilization of green plants to remove 4-chlorobenzoic acid from the environment. She previously obtained a Master of Science in Environmental Chemistry and Technology in June 2003 from the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague. Additional training includes participation in a European Ph.D. Summer School at the University of Genova in Italy in 2005 focused on biomonitoring and microbial transformation of pollutants, an intensive course on uptake and effects of xenobiotics in plants at the Royal University of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology in Denmark in 2004, and a course on trends in remediation of soil and sediment at the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands in 2004.

The focus of Dr. Deavers’ research is on lead contamination, remediation, and education. Motivated by personal experience as the mother of a child with elevated blood lead levels, she investigates methods to remove lead from soil and water while working with children and parents on prevention. Her projects include lead poisoning prevention programs in schools, remediation in community gardens, detection of lead in children’s clothing, solidification and stabilization of contaminated soil, and related studies on ibuprofen behavior in natural waters and analytical method comparisons. She integrates students into these community-based efforts to improve the local environment and foster understanding of science’s societal impact.
