About Kanon

Kanon Kino is a Lecturer at the Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo, affiliated with the Department of Civil Engineering in the Graduate School of Engineering and the Department of Human and Social Systems. Her special field of study is long-term climate and environmental change modeling. She is a climate scientist whose research focuses on paleoclimate dynamics, climate modeling, the projection of future extreme events and climate adaptation, land-atmosphere interaction, and polar science. Kino earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth and Planetary Science from Waseda University in 2016, a Master of Science degree in Earth and Planetary Science from The University of Tokyo in 2018, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Earth and Planetary Science from The University of Tokyo in 2022. Prior to her current appointment in 2026, she served as a Research Associate in the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Tokyo from 2022 to 2026 and held a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science fellowship from 2019 to 2021. Her professional experience also includes roles as a research assistant and teaching assistant at various institutions within The University of Tokyo and related organizations. Kino has received several honors, including the Young Scientists Travel Award from the International Partnership in Ice Core Sciences in 2022, the Best Poster Award from the British Antarctic Survey in 2023, and multiple awards from The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Engineering, such as the萌芽賞 in 2025 and 2026 for her contributions to synoptic paleo-meteorology and high-resolution climate modeling. She has delivered public lectures and outreach activities, including presentations at high schools in Japan and Taiwan. Her work contributes to understanding past, present, and future climate changes through model simulations and analysis of paleoclimate records.
