Great Professor!
Karen Farquharson is Professor of Sociology in the School of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne. She holds the positions of Chair of the Anti-Racism Hallmark Research Initiative, President of the Academic Board, and Research Priority Area Lead for Migration and Mobility at the Melbourne Social Equity Institute. Previously, she served as Head of the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne, Associate Professor of Sociology, and Associate Dean (Research and Engagement) at Swinburne University of Technology. Her academic journey includes a PhD from Harvard University, where in the 1990s she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship for fieldwork in post-Apartheid South Africa in 1995. Initially intending to study violence in Cape Town, she pivoted her research to media discourses on societal transformation, exploring competing narratives of Africanisation versus merit-based ideologies, which highlighted racialized power relations and tensions between diversity and merit.
Farquharson's research focuses on the sociology of race, ethnicity, and racism, particularly in media and sport, addressing diversity, social inclusion, belonging, exclusion, and responses to racism in diverse societies. In Australia, her work examines race relations, multiculturalism's role in social cohesion, challenges faced by Indigenous peoples and African migrants, and structural barriers in community sports clubs, such as exclusionary attitudes toward South Asian youth in cricket. She has co-authored three books, including Qualitative Social Research: Contemporary Methods for the Digital Age (SAGE Publications Ltd, 2015). Key publications include A Fair Game for All? How Community Sports Clubs in Australia Deal with Diversity, Racism and White Privilege: Highly Skilled Immigrant Women Workers in Australia, and contributions to projects on managing racism in Australian junior sport. She leads Australian Research Council-funded initiatives, such as Enhancing the Capacity of Victorian Sport to Tackle Racism (2023-2025). Farquharson contributes to public discourse through Pursuit articles, the Kep Enderby Memorial Lecture (2023), Wheeler Centre events, and discussions on strengthening multiculturalism amid conflict. Her scholarship underscores structural factors perpetuating inequality and advocates proactive strategies for inclusion and anti-racism in settler colonial contexts.
