About Karen

Karen M. Mustian, Ph.D., M.P.H., is Dean’s Professor of Surgery, Cancer Control and Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Rochester. She serves as Co-Leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program at the Wilmot Cancer Institute. Mustian joined the University of Rochester Medical Center in 2003 as a research assistant professor. Her research focuses on the role of physical activity and exercise on cancer- and treatment-related side effects. She is the founder and director of the PEAK Human Performance Science and Clinical Research Lab.

Mustian earned a B.S. in 1991 and an M.A. in 1993 in Exercise/Sport Science from East Carolina University, a Ph.D. in Exercise/Sport Science from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2003, and an M.P.H. in Public Health from the University of Rochester in 2009. She has received numerous awards, including the University of Rochester Medical Center Rubin-Mitchell Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring Award, the Davey Memorial Award for Outstanding Cancer Research, and a national leadership award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Mustian has led or contributed to multiple clinical trials and holds several patents related to exercise interventions for cancer survivors. She previously served as Associate Director for Population Science at the Wilmot Cancer Institute.
