Dr Karen Schultz serves as a Lecturer in Griffith Law School at Griffith University. A qualified Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland, she brings practical experience from private practice at Allens, formerly known as Feez Ruthning. Her comprehensive academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the University of Queensland, a Master of Laws from Queensland University of Technology, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland awarded in January 2011.
In her teaching role, Dr Schultz delivers courses oriented toward legal theory, jurisprudence, constitutional law, and international law, with a particular emphasis on international human rights. She was awarded the 2024 Griffith Teaching Citation by the Arts, Education and Law Group for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. Her research explores intersections of law and technology, legal history, and philosophy in judicial decision-making, including utopian literature's appraisal of legal systems and the subtle influence of philosophical thought in antipodean courts. Key publications encompass the edited collection Legal History Turns (Federation Press, 2016); "Backdoor Use of Philosophers in Judicial Decision-Making? Antipodean Reflections" (Griffith Law Review, 2016); "Future Citizens or Intergenerational Aliens? Limits of Australian Constitutional Citizenship" (Griffith Law Review, 21(1), 2012); "Griffith and Dante: Entanglement, Convergence, Contrapasso" (Queensland Review, 2023); and "Utopia and Intellectual Humility: More, Bacon and Swift Appraising Law and Technology" (Law, Technology and Humans, 2025). Dr Schultz contributes editorially to the Griffith Law Review and chairs the organising committee for Griffith Law School's Legal History Seminar Series, fostering discourse on legal philosophy and history.
