Professor Kate Nash serves as Dean and Head of the School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences within the College of Human and Social Futures at the University of Newcastle, a role she commenced in May 2023. She earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Sydney, a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a Doctor of Philosophy in Communication and Media Studies from the University of New England, and a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching from the University of Tasmania. Nash's career includes nine years at the University of Leeds, where she advanced to Professor of Media and Communication, served as Head of the School of Media and Communication, and acted as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures from 2020 to 2023. In these positions, she focused on research impact, securing increased funding and developing the school's internationalisation strategy. Earlier, she lectured in Media and Journalism at the University of Tasmania while completing her PhD part-time and worked as a broadcaster at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, producing radio, television, and online content. She also holds a board position at Wide Angle, an organisation supporting the Tasmanian screen sector.
Nash is a media and communications expert whose research examines the power of documentaries in shaping worldviews, the integration of documentary media with digital technologies, audience responses, industry barriers, and social impacts on challenges like climate change. She advocates for diverse storytellers and supports documentary makers amid disruptions from streaming and AI. A leading scholar in interactive documentary, she has authored key books including New Documentary Ecologies: Emerging Platforms, Practices and Discourses (2014, with Craig Hight and Catherine Summerhayes), Interactive Documentary: Theory and Debate (2021), and The Intellect Handbook of Documentary (2025, with Deane Williams). Her publications feature in prominent journals such as Media, Culture & Society, European Journal of Communication, Continuum, and Studies in Documentary Film, where she has been co-editor with Craig Hight since 2018. Nash's work contributes to understanding documentary production, circulation, and ethical dimensions in digital contexts.
