Rate My Professor Kate Pickert

Kate Pickert is an Associate Professor of Journalism and Chair of the Journalism Department at Loyola Marymount University in the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, where she has taught since 2015. She earned a B.A. in Art History and a Special Major in Political Journalism from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2001, graduating summa cum laude as an Honors Scholar and member of Phi Beta Kappa. Pickert received an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 2003, where she was awarded the Kwitney Investigative Reporting Scholarship. Before joining LMU, she served as a staff writer at TIME magazine from 2008 to 2015, covering federal health care reform, national politics, abortion rights, gun control, and California-specific issues such as state politics, water use, and wildfires. Her TIME work included cover stories like "What Choice?" on abortion restrictions (January 14, 2013), "The Art of Being Mindful" (February 3, 2014), and "The Man Who Remade Motherhood" (May 21, 2012). Earlier, Pickert was a reporter at New York magazine (2004-2006), freelance contributor to publications including Outside and Popular Science (2006-2008), and staff reporter at the Watertown Daily Times (2001-2002). She also taught as an adjunct instructor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism (2013) and the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism (2014).

In 2019, Pickert published her book RADICAL: The Science, Culture and History of Breast Cancer in America with Little, Brown, informed by her personal experience as a breast cancer survivor and her health policy reporting. Other notable works include contributions to Barack Obama: Eight Years (TIME Books, 2016) and articles in The Washington Post, Glamour, and Medium. At LMU, she directs the journalism program, emphasizing journalism ethics, media literacy, and new media. Pickert has engaged in public discussions, including faculty pub nights on her book and panels on artificial intelligence, misinformation, and journalism challenges. Her expertise spans journalism, media, new media, and journalism ethics.
