Dr Kathryn Bain is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Health at Southern Cross University in Lismore, New South Wales. She earned a Bachelor of Applied Science from Curtin University and a Doctor of Health Science from the University of Sydney in 2012. Her doctoral thesis, 'The Impact of Neuro-Developmental Treatment on the Performance of Daily Living Tasks by Children with Cerebral Palsy - Pilot Studies in Measuring NDT Outcomes,' investigated the efficacy of Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) in improving functional daily task performance among children with cerebral palsy. Bain is a certified NDT Paediatric Occupational Therapist Instructor with the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association (USA), holding credentials as OT, HScD, C/NDT, and additional certification in Sensory Integration (SiPT).
Bain's research specializes in multi-modal interventions to enhance motor capacity and goal attainment in children with moderate to severe cerebral palsy. In 2023, she co-authored 'Goal attainment of children with cerebral palsy participating in multi-modal intervention' in Child: Care, Health and Development, collaborating with researchers from Southern Cross University and the University of Sydney. The study employed individualized goal attainment scales for family-specified daily tasks, demonstrating significant post-intervention improvements in the treatment group compared to controls (p = 0.0321, large effect size). The intervention, led by occupational therapists and assisted by health science students, was supported by a grant from the United States Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association. Bain has contributed to conference presentations, including at the 2019 Australian Occupational Therapy Conference on early interventions and motion capture for functional assessment. Professionally, she directs Paediatric Therapy & Workshops in Freshwater Creek, Victoria, providing intensive therapy programs, and co-founded Children's Therapy Services and Kids+ Foundation in Geelong.
