About Kathryn

Kathryn Quigley serves as Department Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism at Rowan University’s Ric Edelman College of Communication & Creative Arts. She holds a B.A. from Villanova University and an M.A. from the University of Maryland, where she completed a graduate fellowship focused on issues and concerns of children and their families. Prior to her academic appointment, Quigley worked as a reporter for daily newspapers in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Florida, including The Philadelphia Inquirer, Palm Beach Post, Orlando Sentinel, Daytona Beach News-Journal, and Fayetteville Observer, specializing in news and feature reporting. She remains active as a freelance journalist and essayist.

At Rowan, Quigley teaches courses such as News Reporting 2, Journalism Portfolio Production, Feature Writing, and Media Ethics, emphasizing the fundamentals of writing, crafting stories, and ethical practices in covering current events. She coordinates the Journalism Department’s Internship program and advised The Whit student newspaper for more than ten years, supporting its production in print, online, and social media formats. Her research specializations include media ethics, children and families journalism—addressing underreported topics like rising rates of autism diagnoses in children, teens and technology, and foster care trends—narrative writing, and pop culture. Quigley has provided students with hands-on experiences, such as leading a reporting trip to the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, where they covered protests, politicians, and celebrities. She organizes conferences on children and families journalism, supports initiatives like South Jersey Climate News, and serves as internship coordinator. A recent publication is her article “You Know You Are From South Jersey” in NJ Family Magazine (April 2024). As department chair, she leads the program, promoting professional development and rigorous journalism training.
