Professor Kathryn D. Sherman serves as Professor of Piano Pedagogy at the Crane School of Music, State University of New York College at Potsdam. In this capacity, she directs the undergraduate and graduate programs in piano pedagogy, providing comprehensive training in teaching methodologies and practices for aspiring piano instructors. She also teaches keyboard skills courses, which are foundational for music majors across various concentrations within the school. Additionally, Sherman holds the administrative role of Dean's Fellow for Assessment, supporting the evaluation and enhancement of educational outcomes in the Crane School of Music.
A Nationally Certified Teacher of Music through the Music Teachers National Association, Sherman demonstrates a high level of professional competence in music education. She maintains an active performing career, regularly appearing in recitals with Crane faculty colleagues and distinguished guest artists. Sherman co-directs the biennial Crane Piano Pedagogy Conference, which brings together educators for professional development sessions on piano teaching techniques. She frequently serves as an adjudicator for local music festivals and auditions and delivers workshops for piano teachers throughout the United States, contributing to the advancement of pedagogy standards nationally. Prior to her appointment at SUNY Potsdam, Sherman was on the faculty at Oklahoma City University, where she taught collegiate class piano, applied piano, and piano pedagogy courses. Her doctoral studies culminated in a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance with an emphasis in piano pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma, accompanied by a prestigious campus-wide Graduate Teaching Award from the Office of the Provost. She holds a Master of Music from the University of Kansas, and Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
