About Katsu

Katsu Takahashi is an associate professor and senior lecturer in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine. He earned his dental degree from the University of Tokushima Faculty of Dentistry in 1989 and completed his graduate studies in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Kyoto University in 1995. He previously served as a postdoctoral researcher in the Craniofacial Developmental Section at the NIH-NIAMS. Takahashi has held successive appointments at Kyoto University, progressing from assistant to internal lecturer and then to lecturer in the Graduate School of Medicine.

His research centers on molecular mechanisms of tooth development and regeneration, with a focus on the roles of BMP and Wnt signaling pathways and the antagonist USAG-1. He is a lead author of the 2021 study published in Science Advances demonstrating that an anti-USAG-1 monoclonal antibody can stimulate tooth growth in mouse models of tooth agenesis. Takahashi has contributed to additional publications on tooth agenesis, supernumerary teeth, and regenerative strategies. He is also chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Kitano Hospital, Tazuke Kofukai Medical Research Institute, and serves as CTO and co-founder of Toregem BioPharma Co., Ltd., a Kyoto University venture company developing tooth regeneration therapies.
