Katsuyoshi Kondoh is a Professor in the Department of Composite Materials Processing at the Joining and Welding Research Institute, within the Engineering faculty at Osaka University, a position he has held since March 2006. He currently serves as Director of the Office of Management and Planning and Vice President of the university. His career includes roles as Associate Professor at The University of Tokyo from February 2000 to March 2006 and researcher at Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. from 1988 to 2000. Kondoh earned his Bachelor of Engineering in 1986, Master of Engineering in 1988, and Ph.D. in Welding Engineering in 1998, all from Osaka University. Since April 2019, he has also been an Invited Professor at Xi’an University of Technology, China.
Kondoh's research specializes in powder metallurgy, fabrication of high-performance metal matrix composites, additive manufacturing of metals, and advanced processing of light alloys such as titanium and magnesium. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles, secured more than 130 patents, and accumulated over 15,000 citations, demonstrating substantial impact in materials engineering. Key publications include "Nanocarbon-reinforced metal-matrix composites for structural applications" (MRS Bulletin, 2019), "TiB Whisker and Nitrogen Solid‐Solution Synergistic Strengthening of Titanium Matrix Composites" (Advanced Engineering Materials, 2021), and edited volumes like "Novel Structured Metallic and Inorganic Materials." He has delivered more than 40 plenary, keynote, and invited lectures at international conferences and serves on editorial boards for materials science journals. His accolades encompass the 2024 Powder and Powder Metallurgy Association Paper Award, 2023 Metal Additive Manufacturing Outstanding Technical Paper Award at AMPM, 2022 EPMA Keynote Papers Award at World PM2022, 2021 70th Anniversary Merit Award from the Japan Light Metals Society, 2019 Osaka University Award in University Operations, 2017 Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers Division Achievement Award, and 2014 Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
