About Kaushik

Kaushik Das is an Associate Professor in the Department of Wind and Energy Systems at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). He holds a Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering from West Bengal University of Technology (2009), a Master of Technology in Power Systems Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (2011), and a PhD in Wind Energy from DTU (2016), with a thesis on the integration of renewable generation in power system defence plans. Before pursuing his doctorate, he worked as a Software Engineer (Research) at IBM India Research Lab from 2011 to 2013. At DTU, his career progressed from PhD student (2013-2016) and postdoc (2016-2019) to tenure-track researcher (2019-2022), senior researcher (2022-2023), and associate professor since 2023. He currently serves as Head of Studies for the MSc in Sustainable Energy Technologies (Wind Energy study line), coordinator for the Nordic Five Tech Master in Innovative Sustainable Energy Engineering (System Integration of Wind Power study line), and Scientific Director for Hybrids, Storage, and Grid at the DTU-TotalEnergies Excellence Center.

Das's research focuses on the design and operation of utility-scale hybrid power plants, power system balancing, integration of renewable power generation, dynamic modelling and control of wind power, and grid integration of renewables. He leads major projects such as GREAT (PI, €3.2 million), HAVEN (€5.9 million), SOLARX (€3 million), and IEA Wind Task 50 as operating agent. He developed the open-source HyDesign tool for optimizing hybrid power and energy plants. Key publications include 'Research Challenges and Opportunities of Utility-Scale Hybrid Power Plants' (Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Energy and Environment, 2025), 'Optimal Offering and Operation Strategy for Hybrid Power Plants in Hour-ahead mFRR Energy Activation Markets' (International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems, 2025), 'A Review on Energy Management System for Grid-connected Utility-scale Renewable Hybrid Power Plants' (Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Energy and Environment, 2024), and 'Hierarchical Control Architecture of Co-located Hybrid Power Plants' (International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems, 2022). His work has garnered over 2,200 citations. Awards include the AEG Elektronfonden’s Elektron Award (2022), Best Paper in MPCE journal (2020), Top Cited Article in WIREs Energy and Environment (2019-2020), and Best Poster at Wind Offshore Copenhagen (2019). Das contributes to WindEurope's System Integration Working Group, CIGRE JWG C6/C2.34, and serves as editor for special issues in Energies.
