Dr. Kayla Javier-Joyner serves as Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Wingate University, where she joined the faculty in 2020. Her academic journey began with a B.S. degree from Bridgewater State University, followed by advanced graduate training at Clemson University, where she earned both her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Dr. Javier-Joyner's dedication to outstanding instruction in mathematics courses has been formally acknowledged through the university's Debra M. O'Neal Award for Excellence in Teaching, which she received in 2025. This honor highlights her ability to engage students effectively in complex mathematical concepts within the Department of Mathematics.
Actively contributing to the scholarly development of undergraduates, Dr. Javier-Joyner has mentored several student research projects focused on intriguing topics in probability. She supervised Adan Aranda's honors research, which examined prominent probability paradoxes such as the Monty Hall problem, Bertrand's Paradox, and the Birthday Problem. Aranda presented the results of this investigation at Wingate University's Fall Wellspring Symposium on November 19, 2024. In another collaboration, Dr. Javier-Joyner guided Imani Ballou during an honors project and the Reeves Summer Research program on the probabilities underlying roulette. Ballou independently developed a simulation program to model thousands of spins, empirically confirming that roulette functions as a game of pure chance without predictable patterns. This research was presented at university events and received coverage in institutional media releases in December 2025, coinciding with Ballou's graduation. Beyond mentoring, Dr. Javier-Joyner demonstrated leadership by chairing the search committee for a new Instructor of Mathematics position, as detailed in the March 2024 job posting. She also participates as a Workday Change Champion, aiding in the university's administrative system enhancements. These roles reflect her broader impact on both academic and operational aspects of Wingate University.
