Professor Kelvin Joseph Bwalya serves as Professor of Computer Information Systems and Director of Research Development at Sohar University in Oman, within the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in Hong Kong and holds a C1 rating from the South African National Research Foundation as an Established Researcher. Bwalya earned his PhD in Information Management from the University of Johannesburg, MSc in Computer Science from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and BSc in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from Moscow Power Engineering Technical University. His previous roles include Deputy Dean for Research and Internationalization at the University of Johannesburg, and he has served as a Visiting Professor at various universities globally, fostering collaborations with institutions in China, Spain, the USA, and South Korea.
In 2025, Professor Bwalya received the IDSAI Young Scientist Award recognizing his outstanding contributions to data science and artificial intelligence. His research specializations encompass data science, artificial intelligence, e-Government, business process automation, big data, ambient intelligence, and digital inclusion in developing countries. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, including three monographs and six edited books, amassing more than 2,400 citations on Google Scholar. Bwalya has extensively supervised postgraduate students and examined over 100 Master's and PhD theses. He has led tertiary accreditation reviews for IT programs in Botswana, South Africa, and Zambia, and provided consultancies to public and private sector organizations. As a member of professional bodies such as the South African Institute of Computer Scientists and Information Technologists, Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa, Global Community of Information Professionals, Association of Information Systems Professionals, and Korea Information Processing Society, he maintains a strong influence in the field of computer information systems.
