About Ken

Dr Ken Tann is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Business at the University of Queensland Business School. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Sydney, completed in 2011 with a thesis titled 'Semogenesis of a nation: An iconography of Japanese identity.' Serving as the in-house linguist at the UQ Business School, Tann specializes in applying linguistic and semiotic techniques to interdisciplinary research. His work focuses on business communication, employability skills, and office design, helping industry professionals enhance value through effective communication. This analytical framework has been applied in media, forensic, education, and workplace contexts. He currently supervises PhD research in marketing, finance, and aged care, including serving as Principal Advisor for the 2023 PhD completion 'Un-packaging fresh food packaging: A social semiotic perspective' and Associate Advisor for the 2022 PhD 'Deeply discrediting: The stigma of working in aged care.'

Tann has assisted governmental bodies in implementing the Australian Curriculum and delivered invited talks at the Climate Change: Business and Organisational Responses Symposium and the English Teachers' Association of New South Wales Discovery Day. His research output comprises 28 works from 2012 to 2025, with over 415 citations on Google Scholar. Key publications include 'Imagining communities: A multifunctional approach to identity management in texts' (2010, cited 84 times), 'The language of identity discourse' (2013, cited 63 times), 'Deeply discrediting: A systematic review examining the conceptualizations and consequences of the stigma of working in aged care' (2021, cited 52 times), 'The social construction of stigma in aged-care work: implications for health professionals’ work intentions' (2022), 'Bridging disciplinary knowledge: the challenge of integrating EAP in business education' (2021), 'A framework for understanding assessment practice in higher education' (2023), and 'Reconceptualizing stigmas in aged care: a typology of stigmatizing discourses in the aged-care context' (2023). He led the project 'Unpacking fresh food packaging: inserting clarity and transparency into your packaging' funded by Mulgowie Farming Company from 2018 to 2021.
