Dr. Kenneth Shafer is a full-time professor of History at Antelope Valley College, serving in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division. Located in office MH 214 with telephone extension 6906, he can be reached at kshafer2@avc.edu. The History department at AVC offers a comprehensive introductory program featuring courses such as World Civilization, Western Civilization, various American Histories, and specialized offerings including Vietnam to Iraq, History of the American West, African American History, Women in American History, Cultural History of Mexico, History of California, History of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Dr. Shafer has been affiliated with Antelope Valley College for over a decade, noted as a History instructor in the 2010 accreditation self-study report where he served on the Standard III C&D committee for Technology and Financial Resources. In 2011, he presented revisions to the distance education formats of HIST 107, U.S. History from 1607 to 1877—including the online only, hybrid, and ITV versions—to the Academic Policies and Procedures (AP&P) committee, which subsequently approved the changes that included replacing references to PowerPoint with general presentation software and noting the obsolescence of the ITV format. Shafer continues to serve as the Social and Behavioral Sciences Representative on the AP&P committee, with his term extending through June 30, 2024. Additionally, as a member of the Faculty Professional Development Committee (FPDC) in 2018, he participated in discussions regarding professional milestones speakers and was scheduled to deliver a 25-minute presentation titled "Teaching Critical Thinking Across Disciplines" in recognition of a recent scholarly or creative arts publication.
