Professor Kent Anderson serves as Emeritus Professor in the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor - Engagement and Equity Division at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global) in July 2021, leading strategic initiatives in alumni engagement, community and global engagement, strategic partnerships, marketing, communications, and international student matters. Previously, he held the position of Senior Advisor on higher education to the Australian Federal Minister for Education, Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Strategic Advisor at the University of Newcastle in 2019, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Engagement) at the University of Western Australia from 2014 to 2018, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) at the University of Adelaide, Foundation Director of the School of Culture, History and Language at the Australian National University, and Associate Professor in Law at Hokkaido University. An accomplished international lawyer specialising in comparing Asian legal systems, he has made significant contributions to legal scholarship, particularly on Japanese law. His notable publications include 'The cross-border insolvency paradigm: a defense of the modified universal approach considering the Japanese experience' (2000, 101 citations), 'Lay participation in the Japanese justice system: A few preliminary thoughts regarding the lay assessor system (saiban-in seido) from domestic historical and international perspectives' (2004, 81 citations), 'Japan's Quasi-Jury (Saiban-in) Law: An Annotated Translation of the Act Concerning Participation of Lay Assessors in Criminal Trials' (2005, 68 citations), 'Corporate governance in the 21st century: Japan's gradual transformation' (2009, 37 citations), and 'Small Businesses Reorganizations: An Examination of Japan's Civil Rehabilitation Act Considering US Policy Implications and Foreign Creditor's Practical Interests' (2001, 33 citations).
Prior to his academic career, Professor Anderson worked as a commercial lawyer in Hawaii and as a marketing manager for a regional airline in Alaska. He completed tertiary studies in Law, Politics, Economics, and Asian Studies at institutions in the US, Japan, and the UK. He is a founding Co-Director and Advisory Board member of the Australian Network for Japanese Law (ANJeL), former President of the Asian Studies Association of Australia, and has served on the New Colombo Plan Advisory Board, National Library of Australia Council, Ministerial Council for International Education, Board of Canberra Grammar School, and Languages and Cultures Network for Australian Universities (LCNAU). His leadership has advanced internationalisation and community engagement in Australian higher education.
