Md Khairul Islam is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the School of Health and Clinical Sciences at the University of Western Australia. He earned a Bachelor of Pharmacy (B Pharm) from Rajshahi University, Bangladesh, in December 2011, and a Master of Pharmacy (M Pharm) from the same university in January 2014. After completing his degrees, he worked as Product Executive (Marketing) at ACI Pharmaceutical Ltd. and Opsonin Pharmaceutical Ltd. for about a year. He then served as Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy at Varendra University, Bangladesh, for three and a half years. In October 2018, Islam commenced his PhD studies at the University of Western Australia in the Division of Pharmacy, completing them in December 2022. Since then, he has held positions including Research Officer (February 2022-present), Lecturer (June 2022-May 2023), and Adjunct Senior Lecturer (July 2023-present). He is involved in casual teaching, demonstrating laboratory sessions, and supervising M.Pharm. project students.
Islam's research specializations encompass medicinal chemistry and food chemistry, with a primary focus on the authentication and quality control of honey using High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC). His work, funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Honey Bee Products, investigates chemical profiles and physicochemical characteristics of Western Australian honeys such as Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) and Australian stingless bee honey. He has received major awards including the Cooperative Research Centres Scholarship for Honey Bee Products (2018), UWA Scholarship for International Research Fees (2018), and National Science and Technology Fellowship (2014). Islam contributes as a reviewer for Food Analytical Methods (since 2022), Scientific Reports, Current Research in Food Science, and Journal of Planar Chromatography - Modern TLC.
