Kikuë Tachibana is a molecular biologist and Director of the Department of Totipotency at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (MPIB) in Martinsried, Germany. She was appointed as a Max Planck Director in 2019. Previously, she served as a group leader at the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna from 2011. Tachibana earned a BA Hons in Natural Sciences, Genetics from the University of Cambridge, UK, and completed her PhD thesis on DNA replication and its regulation under the supervision of Ron Laskey at the MRC Cancer Cell Unit, University of Cambridge. She conducted postdoctoral research on the maintenance of sister chromatid cohesion in oocytes in the laboratory of Kim Nasmyth at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford, UK.
Her research focuses on the mechanisms of totipotency reprogramming, spatial chromatin reorganization, and zygotic genome activation in mouse embryos, employing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates mechanistic cell biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and biochemistry. In 2017, she received the Walther Flemming Medal from the German Society for Cell Biology. In 2018, she was awarded the Förderpreis der Stadt Wien for outstanding scientific work. A key publication is the 2017 paper in Nature titled “Single-nucleus Hi-C reveals unique chromatin reorganization at oocyte-to-zygote transition.” Tachibana has contributed to advancing understanding of early embryonic chromatin dynamics with potential implications for regenerative medicine.
