About Kim

Associate Professor Kim Bell-Anderson is a teaching and research academic at the Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney, affiliated with the School of Life and Environmental Sciences in the Faculty of Science. She earned a BSc (Hons) in Physiology from the University of New South Wales in 1995 and a PhD in Medicine from the same institution in 2000. Since 2003, she has taught food and nutrition science to undergraduate students and currently coordinates the course NUTM3001 Introductory Nutrition. Bell-Anderson has pioneered interdisciplinary teaching approaches, pairing third-year nutrition students with statistics students to analyze data from the Australian Health Survey 2011-12. These innovative methods emphasize team diversity in gender, ethnicity, discipline, and culture, fostering psychological safety and productive collaboration through tools like her custom online application for identifying thinking preferences. Her commitment to educational excellence was recognized with the University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in 2020 and the Faculty of Science Learning & Teaching Award for Outstanding Educational Engagement and Innovation in the same year.

Bell-Anderson's research centers on nutritional biology, with a focus on nutritional physiology and energy metabolism using pre-clinical models of metabolic disease. Current projects explore Australian native grains developed in co-design with Gamilaraay and Yuwaalaraay elders and knowledge holders. Her scholarly contributions include highly cited publications such as 'Systems-level analysis of insulin action in mouse strains provides insight into traits related to healthy ageing' (Cell Metabolism, 2022), 'Maternal macronutrient intake effects on offspring macronutrient preferences and body composition across the lifespan' (Obesity, 2024), 'The effect of high-sugar feeding on rodent metabolic phenotype' (Nature Metabolism Communications, 2024), and 'Determining the Glycaemic Index of Standard and High-Sugar Muesli Products by an In Vitro Method' (Foods, 2018). She leads the Oceanic Nutrition Leadership Platform Network and Communications Working Group, serves on the High Level Health Claims Committee of Food Standards Australia New Zealand, and contributes to equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives through university committees and Science in Australia Gender Equity.
