Dr. Kim Nairn, BVetBiol, BVetSc, graduated from Murdoch University's veterinary school in 1984. He began his career in mixed animal practice before spending 15 years as Technical Services Manager for Milne Feeds, Festive Foods, and Australian Natural Pork, where his responsibilities expanded to include technical support for pigs, meat chickens, and turkeys, with a growing emphasis on the pig industry. In early 2001, Nairn joined Portec Veterinary Services, which evolved into the Western Australia base of Apiam Swine Services under Apiam Animal Health following acquisitions in 2015. Comprising four full-time veterinarians and one technician, the team delivers comprehensive pig health, management, and production consulting to corporate and family farms, feed mills, pharmaceutical companies, pig breeding companies, processors, government bodies, and industry organizations. Key initiatives include operating the Pig Health Monitoring Scheme for the Western Australian pig industry, managing and delivering stockperson training programs, and participating in industry committees focused on training, exotic disease surveillance, research, and producer groups. In 2007, Nairn established Peel Pork, a 400-sow farrowing-to-finish piggery in southwest Western Australia, utilized for on-farm research and development as well as hands-on teaching for stockpersons and veterinary students.
At Murdoch University, Nairn serves as Senior Adjunct Lecturer for the Intensive Animal Industries course since 2009. Apiam Swine Services holds a contract with Murdoch University's School of Veterinary Medicine to design and deliver the pig and poultry health and production curriculum to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students. Nairn contributes to pig industry research and development through specific DVM student projects and involvement in Pork Innovation WA activities. As a foundation member of the Australian Pork Limited Research and Innovation Levy (APRIL), Apiam Animal Health supports Australian pork producers via leadership, innovation, technology, and application of best pig science. Nairn's professional passions encompass food production, bolstering regional communities, driving change, and empowering staff and clients to achieve their potential. His longstanding contributions bridge veterinary practice, education, and industry advancement in swine production.
