Professor Kirsten Black is Professor of Sexual and Reproductive Health in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. She serves as Joint Head of the Discipline of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology in the Central Clinical School and practices clinically as an academic gynaecologist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Her clinical interests include contraception, abortion, preconception care, early pregnancy care, ultrasound, general gynaecology, and menopause. Black holds the qualifications MBBS, MPH&TM, PhD from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London (2008), FRANZCOG (Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists since 2002), FFSRH (Fellowship of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare, UK), and DDU. She has progressed in her career from Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to her current professorial position.
Professor Black chairs the RANZCOG Special Interest Group in Sexual and Reproductive Health, serves on the College's Women’s Health Committee and Global Health Committee, and acts as an associate editor for the RANZCOG journal. She has secured over $10 million in research funding and authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, exerting considerable influence in women's health. Her research specializations encompass sexual and reproductive health, with a focus on low-resource settings and capacity building in the Asia Pacific region. Key publications include "Incidence and outcomes of pregnancy-associated cancer in Australia, 1994–2008: a population-based linkage study" (Lee et al., BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, 2012), "Worldwide use of intrauterine contraception: a review" (Buhling et al., Contraception, 2014), "Prevalence and predictors of iron deficiency anemia in children under five years of age in Pakistan, a secondary analysis of national nutrition survey data 2011–2012" (Habib et al., PLoS One, 2016), "Impact of demographic factors, early family relationships and depressive symptomatology in teenage pregnancy" (Quinlivan et al., Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, 2004), "A review of barriers and myths preventing the more widespread use of intrauterine contraception in nulliparous women" (Black et al., The European Journal of Contraception & Reproductive Health Care, 2012), and "Teenage pregnancy" (Mann et al., Australian Journal of General Practice, 2020). Among her honors is the RANZCOG President’s Medal for significant contributions to the College. Professor Black integrates clinical practice, research, teaching, and leadership to promote evidence-based policies and improve women's health outcomes globally.
