About Kotaro

Kotaro Kohno is Professor and Director of the Institute of Astronomy at the Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo. He earned a Master’s degree in 1995 and a PhD in 1998 from the University of Tokyo. His career at the University of Tokyo includes appointments as Assistant Professor from 1999 to 2001 at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Associate Professor from 2001 to 2009, and Professor since 2009. He has served as Director of the Institute of Astronomy since 2024.

Kohno’s research centers on extragalactic radio astronomy, with a focus on millimeter and submillimeter-wave observations of active galaxies, high-redshift galaxies, the interstellar medium, star formation, active galactic nuclei, and galaxy evolution. He leads projects such as the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey and contributes to the development of instruments including DESHIMA and plans for next-generation telescopes like the Large Submillimeter Telescope. His work involves collaborations on surveys using ALMA, JVLA, and JWST, as well as studies of gamma-ray burst host galaxies and the chemical and dynamical properties of galaxies.
