Kristiina Annika Lillqvist serves as Senior University Lecturer in the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems at Aalto University. She earned her doctoral degree in Wood Science from Aalto University in 2014 and has completed Professional Teacher Education. Her academic career centers on wood material science, with research specializations in wood surface modification through methods such as gaseous ozone treatment, charring, and thermal modification. Lillqvist has contributed to studies on wood wettability, adhesive bonding, densification of modified woods, and the performance of wood-plastic composites under weathering and soaking-drying cycles.
Throughout her career at Aalto University, Lillqvist has participated in projects including PerfectWood for durable wood materials and initiatives to develop teaching in wood product technology and construction. Her key publications include works on gaseous ozone treatment of wood published in BioResources in 2025 and 2026, natural weathering of charred woods in the European Journal of Wood and Wood Products in 2022, and surface modification by charring in the Journal of Materials Science in 2017. She teaches courses on wood mechanics, wood structure and anatomy, and introduction to wood material, emphasizing life cycle thinking in sustainable wood applications. Lillqvist maintains involvement in research outputs totaling over 30 publications and supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to industry innovation, sustainable cities, and responsible consumption.
