Kyle Murdoch earned his Master of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Otago between 1991 and 1997. He currently holds the position of Student Media Manager at the Otago University Students' Association (OUSA) in Dunedin, New Zealand, where he oversees operations for student media entities such as Radio One 91FM and Critic Magazine. As part of his responsibilities, he serves as OUSA's trustee on the Student Radio Network.
With more than two decades of experience in the media sector, particularly across Asia, Murdoch has built a distinguished career in factual television production, directing, and executive management. Early in his career, he worked for Star TV and News Corp in Beijing, later establishing the Beijing office for NHNZ Ltd. in 2010. Serving as Managing Director and Chief Executive of NHNZ Ltd. from 2013 to 2020, he fostered key partnerships with prominent broadcasters including China’s CCTV, Japan’s NHK, Alibaba’s Youku, Tencent, IQIYI, SMG, Discovery Asia, Disney, and National Geographic Asia. Under his leadership, NHNZ produced impactful documentaries such as the Emmy-nominated "Saving Africa’s Giant" featuring Yao Ming, which contributed to legislative changes on ivory imports in China; "Jackie Chan’s Green Heroes" for National Geographic promoting environmental initiatives; and "Orangutan Jungle School" for NHK, Channel 4, and Love Nature, raising awareness about habitat destruction in Indonesia. These achievements earned NHNZ the NZ China Trade Association Business Award for outstanding contribution to NZ-China business relations in 2015 and the Supreme Business Award at the 2016 Westpac Business Awards.
In 2021, Murdoch founded Nature Film in partnership with Singapore-based IFA Media, focusing on nature-inspired and impact content for the Asia-Pacific region. He concurrently manages Otepoti Production Services Ltd. and holds significant governance roles, including Chair of Film Otago Southland, Honorary New Zealand Adviser to the Asia New Zealand Foundation since 2022, and trustee positions in relevant networks.
