Dr. Kylie Sandy-Hodgetts serves as Adjunct Research Fellow in the School of Human Sciences and Senior Research Fellow in the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Western Australia, within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She is also Associate Professor at the Personalised Medicine Centre, Murdoch University, and Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine at Cardiff University, Masters in Tissue Healing and Wound Repair Programme. Her research specializations include wound healing, prevention, risk assessment, and clinical trials in surgical wound healing. As Chief Investigator of Phase I-IV clinical trials, she focuses on early identification and prevention of surgical wound complications, including surgical site infection and dehiscence. She has developed tools such as the Sandy Grading System for surgical wound dehiscence classification and risk assessment frameworks integrated into international clinical consensus documents.
Dr. Sandy-Hodgetts is the Founder and inaugural President of the International Surgical Wound Complications Advisory Panel (ISWCAP) and Founder and Director of the Skin Integrity Research Institute. She has led major organizations as immediate Past Chair and inaugural Deputy Chair of the Board of Wounds Australia, Council Member of the European Wound Management Association, and Committee Member of the World Union of Wound Healing Societies Scientific and Ethics Committee. Her scholarly impact includes first-authoring over 20 original research papers, co-chairing clinical consensus documents, and contributing book chapters. Key publications are 'International Surgical Wound Complications Advisory Panel: Guideline for post-operative incision care' (2025, Journal of Wound Care), 'A non-randomised pragmatic trial for the early detection and prevention of surgical wound complications' (2022), 'Determining risk factors for surgical wound dehiscence: a literature review' (2013), and 'Surgical wound dehiscence: a conceptual framework for patient assessment' (2018). Awards include the JWC WUWHS Gold Award for Innovation in Surgical Site Infection (2021), Journal of Wound Care Best Clinical Research (2018), and Innovation in Surgical Site Infection Third Place (2019). A regular invited speaker at local and international conferences, she delivers education on wound care research and skin integrity, enhancing global clinical practices and health services outcomes.
