About Laurie

Laurie Battle is a distinguished professor in Mathematics, currently serving as Professor and Department Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Montana Technological University. Throughout her career, she has held positions including Associate Professor at Montana Tech since 2010, Assistant Professor at the same institution from 2006-2007 and 2008-2010, Visiting Assistant Professor at Idaho State University (2007-2008), and Assistant Professor at Georgia College and State University (2003-2006). Her academic interests lie in applied mathematics, with a focus on mathematical biology and modeling ecological systems. Battle's research examines population dynamics and interactions in aquatic environments. Notable projects include developing a stochastic simulation model for native Yellowstone cutthroat trout and non-native rainbow trout in the South Fork Snake River, Idaho, assessing management strategies for species viability. She has also collaborated on models predicting the impact of dam removal on Taiwan's endangered Formosan landlocked salmon. Her scholarship is evidenced by publications such as "Extremal eigenvalues for a Sturm-Liouville problem" (Applied Mathematical Sciences, 2014), "Effectiveness of flow management and rainbow trout harvest on long-term viability of native Yellowstone cutthroat trout in the South Fork Snake River" (Wild Trout Symposium X, 2010), "Modeling competition and hybridization between native cutthroat trout and nonnative rainbow and hybrid trout" (Journal of Biological Dynamics, 2010), "Stieltjes Sturm-Liouville equations: eigenvalue dependence on problem parameters" (Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, 2008), and "Solution dependence on problem parameters for initial value problems associated with the Stieltjes Sturm-Liouville equations" (Electronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2005).

In recognition of her expertise, Battle was awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholar grant in 2014, enabling her to conduct research and teach at National Chung Hsing University in Taiwan on mathematical modeling in ecology. She mentors undergraduate students in research and contributes to educational initiatives like the Create Math Summer Experience at Montana Tech. Battle teaches advanced courses in Mathematics, including Mathematical Modeling, Advanced Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Methods of Proof, Multivariable Calculus, Calculus, Precalculus, and College Algebra. Her work has appeared in international conferences and journals, influencing studies in mathematical ecology and differential equations.
