Laurie Campbell is an associate professor of instructional design and technology in the Department of Learning Sciences and Educational Research at the University of Central Florida's College of Community Innovation and Education. She holds an Ed.D. and serves as Academic Program Coordinator for Instructional Design and Technology as well as director of the Computer Architecture Laboratory. Campbell's research focuses on the design and implementation of technology-supported active personalized learning environments to support knowledge building. She harnesses instructional design to foster identity development and inclusivity among underserved and underrepresented populations, particularly in STEM interdisciplinary contexts. Her work also addresses the development of safe learning environments, including civility, cyberbullying, and online academic incivility.
Campbell has made significant contributions through peer-reviewed publications and collaborative projects. Notable publications include 'Student-created video: An active learning approach in online environments' (2022, Interactive Learning Environments), 'Digital Video as a Personalized Learning Assignment: A Qualitative Study of Student Authored Video Using the ICSDR Model' (2018), and 'Language learning apps or games: an investigation utilizing the RETAIN model' (2016). Additional key works cover 'Virtual and Augmented Reality to Enhance Computational Thinking' (2020), 'Online Academic Incivility Among Adult Learners' (2020), 'Not Another School Shooting: Media, Race, and Gun Violence in K-12 Schools' (2022), and recent studies such as 'Generative Artificial Intelligence Images for Instruction: A Content Analysis' (2025) and 'An Examination of Generative AI Response to Suicide Inquires: Content Analysis' (2025). As co-investigator on NSF grant #1953606, she supports building undergraduate capacity in STEM at UCF, a Hispanic-Serving Institution. She participated in the Cyberlearning Synthesis and Design Workshop on digitally-mediated team learning and is a member of UCF AI for All. Campbell was recognized by the Learning Institute for Elders at UCF for course development. Her interdisciplinary efforts advance equitable educational practices and technology integration in higher education.
