Lawrence Belcher is a Professor of Finance in the School of Business at the University of Indianapolis. He earned a PhD in Economics, with concentrations in Mathematical Economics and Monetary Theory, from Indiana University, a Master of Science in Economics from Auburn University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Economics from Hanover College. With more than 30 years of experience in teaching and academic administration across undergraduate and graduate business programs, Belcher has worked with diverse students ranging from college freshmen to Disney managers. He joined the University of Indianapolis in 2015 as Dean of the School of Business and later returned to full-time faculty status. Previously, from 2011 to 2015, he held the Arthur L. Hodson Endowed Chair in Business at Taylor University, where he led the undergraduate business program as Professor of Finance and Economics. Earlier, he spent over two decades at Stetson University as Professor and Chair of Finance and Director of the George Investments Institute, overseeing a student-managed portfolio valued at nearly $3 million. He has conducted seminars on financial markets for top Disney executives at Walt Disney World Leadership Conferences.
Belcher's expertise spans macroeconomic theory and policy, financial markets, student-managed investment programs, and financial education. His research interests include investor decision-making, investor biases, student-managed investment programs, and poverty evaluation and solutions. He has published in the Journal of Behavioral Finance, Journal of Macroeconomics, Journal of Financial Education, and other academic journals. Notable publications include "Prior Perceptions, Personality Characteristics and Portfolio Preferences among Fund Managers: An Experimental Analysis" (2010), "Experiment No More: The Long-Term Effectiveness of a Student-Managed Investments Program" (2010), "Memory in World Stock Prices" (2004), and "The Information Content of Price Limit Moves" (2003). A national expert on student-managed investment programs, Belcher has provided commentary for the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and Chronicle of Higher Education. He reviews manuscripts for professional journals and has served as president-elect of the Financial Education Association. Belcher has received several teaching awards.
