About Len

Professor Len Sciacca is an Enterprise Professor in Defence Technologies at the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. In this role, he leads the university's defence research portfolio, including collaborations with the United States and partnerships with major defence companies. He is Co-Director and Head of the Melbourne Node of the Centre for Advanced Defence Research and Education (CADRE-OCE) within the Department of Electrical, Mechanical and Infrastructure Engineering. Additionally, he holds an Honorary Enterprise Fellow position in the Control and Signal Processing group in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Professor Sciacca possesses over 30 years of experience spanning government, industry, and research sectors. He has formed extensive collaborations and partnerships in scientific and engineering environments, delivering outcomes with substantial impact. He has led several large research and development programs with multidisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers, in partnerships between universities, industry, and international government agencies, primarily within the defence sector.

Previously, Professor Sciacca served as Chief of the Electronic Warfare and Radar Division and Chief of Science Partnerships and Engagement at the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) in the Department of Defence. His career includes roles at CSIRO, the Universities of Melbourne and Newcastle, and in the defence industry, where he founded and developed a start-up company focused on satellite tracking technologies. He acts as a Defence Science Institute (DSI) Liaison Manager for the University of Melbourne, facilitating engagement between industry, defence, and academia. Professor Sciacca is a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE FTSE) and a Fellow of Engineers Australia. His research focuses on sensor networks, radar signal processing, electronic warfare, target tracking, and adaptive control systems. Key publications include "Networked sensor management and data rate control for tracking maneuvering targets" (2005), "Cooperative sensor networks with bandwidth constraints" (2002), "Bearings-only tracking using hidden Markov models" (1995), "Digital implementation issues in a pulse compression radar system" (1999), "Adaptive Servo Control of Large Antenna Structures" (2001), and "An Adaptive Controller for the Australia Telescope" (1990). His work also extends to radio continuum studies of the Magellanic Clouds and ultrasonic imaging signal processing.
