About Leo

Emeritus Professor Leo Jeffcott is a distinguished veterinary scientist at the University of Sydney's Sydney School of Veterinary Science. He holds an MA from the University of Cambridge, BVetMed and PhD from the University of London, DVSc from the University of Melbourne, honorary VetMedDr from Uppsala University, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (FRCVS). His academic career includes serving as Dean of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge from 1991 to 2004 and Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney from 2004 to 2009. Upon retirement, he was appointed Professor Emeritus of Veterinary Science, maintaining affiliation with the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden.

Professor Jeffcott has made significant contributions to equine veterinary science through leadership in international equestrian events. He has been an official Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) Event Veterinarian since 1977, officiating at four World Equestrian Games and six Olympic Games from 1988 to 2008. He served as President of the Veterinary Commission at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympics, Veterinary Technical Delegate at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, Chairman of the FEI Veterinary Committee from 1998 to 2006, and was the first veterinarian honored as an Honorary Member of the FEI Bureau. His research interests center on equine orthopaedics, wound healing, transportation-related health issues, tendon injuries, back and pelvis pathology, osteoarthritis, and osteochondrosis, resulting in 313 publications with over 9,000 citations. Key works include "Clinical progress in the diagnosis of thoracolumbar problems in horses" (2016), "Health Problems and Risk Factors Associated with Long Haul Transport of Horses in Australia" (2015), "Repeatability of ultrasonographic measurement of cross-sectional area of the multifidus muscle in the horse" (2024), and chapters such as "Sacroiliac Dysfunction" (2009) and contributions to "The Equine Manual" (2006). He continues to mentor veterinarians and students while contributing to research projects.
