Professor Linda-Gail Bekker is a physician-scientist and Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Cape Town. She holds the degrees MBChB, DTMH, DCH, FCP(SA) and PhD. Her research focuses on HIV, tuberculosis and related infectious diseases, with particular interests in programmatic and health service research around antiretroviral rollout, TB integration, and the prevention of HIV in women, youth and men who have sex with men. She is actively involved in community development and engagement.
Professor Bekker serves as Director of the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre at the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine and as Chief Executive Officer of the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation. She is principal investigator of the UCT Clinical Trials Unit funded by the US National Institutes of Health and has contributed to COVID-19 vaccine trials, including co-leading the Sisonke Phase 3B study. She is an NRF A-rated researcher and a past president of the International AIDS Society.
