Lindy McAllister is Professor Emerita in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Sydney School of Health Sciences and the Work Integrated Learning Department. Prior to her retirement in 2018, she held the position of Professor of Work Integrated Learning and served as Associate Dean of the Work Integrated Learning Unit in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Speech Therapy from the University of Queensland, a Master of Arts in Speech Pathology, and a PhD. A prominent figure in speech pathology, she has been National President of Speech Pathology Australia and is a Life Member of the association. In 2023, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to speech pathology in the fields of tertiary education, professional associations, and international development. She is the Founding Director of Trinh Foundation Australia, supporting speech therapy development in Vietnam, and serves as an accreditor for speech pathology degrees in Australia.
McAllister's research specializations encompass work integrated learning, clinical education and supervision, ethical leadership in healthcare, speech-language pathology practice and assessment, work readiness for allied health graduates, and communication rehabilitation in low- and middle-income countries such as Vietnam and sub-Saharan Africa. She has produced 221 publications, accumulating over 4,200 citations on ResearchGate. Notable contributions include co-editing 'Ethics in Speech and Language Therapy' (2009), the article 'Being a Clinical Educator' (2006, Advances in Health Sciences Education), and key papers such as 'Issues in developing valid assessments of speech pathology students' performance' (2009, International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders) and 'Evidence Matters: Strategies for Ensuring Rigour in Designing, Doing, and Publishing Qualitative Research' (2024). As co-editor of the International Journal of Practice-based Learning in Health and Social Care, she has influenced evidence-based practice in health professions education. Her work has advanced qualitative research methods, telesupervision, and interprofessional learning, impacting clinical training globally.
