Professor Lisa McNeill is a Professor in the Department of Marketing within the University of Otago's Otago Business School. She earned her BA, BCom (Hons), and PhD from the University of Otago. Appointed Associate Dean for Postgraduate Research in 2019, she oversees the Business School's postgraduate research programmes, including student admissions, curricula development, recruitment, and student relations initiatives. McNeill teaches primarily in innovation and new product development as well as postgraduate research methods, delivering courses such as MART 306: Market-Led Innovation and MART 460: Research Methods. She supervises PhD, MCom, and Honours students whose research aligns with her interests in consumer behaviour and consumption, retailing, brand management, and sustainability.
McNeill's research focuses on consumer motivations for sustainable choices in fashion products, use, and disposal; nutritional labelling on food products; sustainable packaging alternatives in supermarkets; and consumer acceptance of clean meat products. She contributes to the University of Otago's Food Waste Innovation research theme, which addresses food waste measurement, reduction strategies, innovative technology applications, and behaviour modification among producers and consumers. Additionally, she is a member of the international Sustainable Fashion Consumption Research Group. Her scholarly impact includes a seminal 2015 publication on people's relationships with fashion and sustainability, internationally recognized in the field, and a 2020 paper applying developmental theory to fashion contexts, which ranked among the top ten most downloaded articles in the International Journal of Consumer Studies that year. Recent works encompass 'No love in the labour: How young women perceive physical and emotional effort in second-hand shopping' (2026, Journal of Community & Applied Social Psychology) and the 'Introduction of the Special Issue: Fashion and (Un) Sustainable Behavior' (2025, Journal of Sustainable Marketing, with J. L. Zaichkowsky). McNeill holds associate editor positions at Sustainability, Sage Open, and the International Journal of Consumer Studies; serves on the advisory board of MDPI; and is an editorial board member of Young Consumers. She presented her Inaugural Professorial Lecture, 'The wearable weight of being,' in October 2023.
