He earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Additionally, he was recognized in 2007 for his excellence in teaching within Religious Studies.

Dalton's areas of expertise include American Religious History, Religion and Science, Religion and Modern Culture, and Religion and Healthcare. These interests are reflected in his scholarly output, such as the chapter 'The Early Nineteenth Century' in Religion and Outer Space, edited by Eric Michael Mazur and Sarah McFarland Taylor (Routledge, New York, 2023), and his role as co-editor of The Bloomsbury Reader in the Study of Religion and Popular Culture (Bloomsbury, London, 2021). A member of the American Academy of Religion, Dalton teaches a broad array of courses, including Religious Diversity in America, Religious Cults, Studying Religion: Voodoo, Foodways, Faith, and Fairness, Monsters and Musicals, Alternative Medicine, Religion and Medicine, and Religion and Politics in America. Through these courses and programs, he explores the intersections of religion with contemporary societal issues, contributing to students' understanding of faith in modern contexts and its implications for healthcare, culture, and science.
