Professor Liu Ye is a Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering within the Engineering faculty at the University of Queensland. She earned a Bachelor of Engineering from Zhengzhou University and a Doctor of Philosophy from Beijing University of Technology. Throughout her career at UQ, she has held positions including Deputy Director, External Engagement (International), and leader of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) research program in urban water engineering. Liu Ye has attracted over AU$10 million in competitive research funding from sources such as the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Projects, Discovery Projects, and industry partners including Melbourne Water, Water Corporation, and South Australian Water Corporation. She maintains extensive collaborations with more than 15 water industry partners, Australian state governments, and organizations like Water Services Association of Australia and Water Research Australia. Her contributions include developing free nitrous acid (FNA) technology for biofilm control and sludge reduction, establishing national and international leadership in net-zero emissions from urban wastewater systems.
Liu Ye's research focuses on greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation from biological wastewater treatment processes, sludge minimization and biogas production enhancement, advanced biological nutrient removal technology development, on-line process control and optimisation, and resource recovery from wastes. She has produced 123 scholarly works, comprising 92 journal articles, 28 conference publications, 2 book chapters, and 1 book, with standout publications including 'Nitrous oxide emissions from wastewater treatment processes' (2012, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B), 'Free nitrous acid (FNA)-based pretreatment enhances methane production from waste activated sludge' (2013, Environmental Science & Technology), 'Side-stream sludge treatment using free nitrous acid selectively eliminates nitrite oxidizing bacteria and achieves the nitrite pathway' (2014, Environmental Science & Technology), and editorship of 'Quantification and Modelling of Fugitive Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Urban Water Systems' (2022, IWA Publishing). Professionally, she serves as associate editor for Environmental Science: Water Research and Technology, editorial board member for Engineering journal, and elected member of the Strategic Council of the International Water Association. Liu Ye is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the International Water Association, and has received the Research Innovation Award from the Australia Water Association, UQ Foundation Research Excellence Award, EAIT faculty teaching excellence award, and over eight scientific awards in total.
