About Louise
Dr. Saui'a Louise Mataia-Milo serves as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Senior Lecturer at the National University of Samoa. She holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences and Diploma in Education from the University of Waikato, a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Otago, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Victoria University of Wellington awarded in 2017. Her doctoral thesis examined aspects of Samoan women's wartime experiences. She has taught history at the National University of Samoa for more than twenty years and maintains an active role in Pacific historical scholarship.
Her research focuses on Pacific history, Samoan migration, popular culture during the colonial period, and Pacific participation in international conflicts including the World Wars. Key publications include the chapter "There Are No Commoners in Samoa" in the 2016 volume Mothers' Darlings of the South Pacific, the article "Samoa Women and War: A Category Worthy of Historical Analysis" published in the Journal of the Faculty of Arts in 2020, and contributions to the 2019 VI Samoa Conference Proceedings, which she co-edited. She is Vice President of the Pacific History Association and participates in international initiatives on small island developing states and social science programmes. As a Samoan matai, she engages in community leadership alongside her academic work.
