Great Professor!
Lorraine Graham is an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne, following her role as Foundation Professor of Learning Intervention from July 2014 until early 2025. Prior to joining the University of Melbourne, she was a foundation member of the SiMERR National Research Centre for Science, Information and Communication Technology, and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia at the University of New England. Graham earned her PhD in Instructional Psychology from Simon Fraser University between 1986 and 1993, a Master of Arts in Education, and teaching and special education degrees from Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education from 1977 to 1979. Throughout her career, she has held positions focused on inclusive education, intervention research, and supporting rural and regional education initiatives.
Graham's academic interests center on learning intervention, inclusive education, educational psychology, and the science of learning, particularly for students with learning difficulties and disabilities. She led the expansion of the Learning Intervention Academic Group at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education from four to over 50 staff members, mentoring early career researchers and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. As co-developer of the QuickSmart Literacy and Numeracy intervention programs, her work has reached over 12,000 students in more than 1,000 Australian schools, enhancing core academic skills through evidence-based practices. Her international contributions include the Inclusive Education and Sustainable Learning project with partners in Ecuador, Melbourne, and extending to India. Key publications encompass 'QuickSmart: A Basic Academic Skills Intervention for Middle School Students with Learning Difficulties' (2007), 'Neuromyths and Neurofacts: Information from Cognitive Psychology for Classroom and Learning Support Teachers' (2013), 'A Three-Level Intervention Pedagogy to Enhance the Academic Achievement of Indigenous Students: Evidence from QuickSmart Mathematics Research Relevant to Indigenous Populations' (2013), 'Sustainable Learning: Inclusive Practices for 21st Century Classrooms' (2015), 'Bush Tracks: The Opportunities and Challenges of Rural Teaching and Leadership' (2015), and 'Responsive Teaching for Sustainable Learning' (2023, co-authored with Jeanette Berman, Anne Bellert, and Lisa McKay-Brown). Graham's influence in the field is evidenced by over 4,100 citations of her work on Google Scholar. She has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2023 Australia Day Honours for significant service to education, particularly inclusive learning, is a Fellow of the International Academy of Research into Learning Disabilities, and received the University of New England's Team Award for Excellence in Research.
