Dr. Lu Gan is a Reader in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering within the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences at Brunel University London. She earned her B.Eng. and M.Eng. degrees in Electronic and Information Engineering from Southeast University, China, in 1998 and 2000, respectively, and her Ph.D. in Information Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2004. Before joining Brunel in 2008, she served as a faculty member at the University of Newcastle, Australia, from 2004 to 2006, and at the University of Liverpool, UK, from 2006 to 2007. Earlier, from 2003 to 2004, she was a Research Associate at the Centre for Signal Processing, Nanyang Technological University.
Dr. Gan's research centers on fundamental signal processing and machine learning theories applied to image and video coding and processing, non-destructive terahertz and ultrasound imaging, machine learning in wireless communications, AI model generalization and robustness, AI for safety and cyber-security, post-quantum blockchain and IoT applications, high dynamic range signal sampling using Modulo ADC, and sparse signal processing for 5G wireless communication systems. Her work has attracted funding from the Australian Research Council, EPSRC, Innovate UK, BBSRC, UK Atomic Energy Authority, and TWI. She has received the Best Paper Award on Cryptography and Security from the Journal of The British Blockchain Association in 2022 and a Gold Medal for Task 2, 'Robust anomaly sound detection framework for machine condition monitoring,' at the IEEE DCASE 2022 Challenge. Selected publications include 'A novel sparse adaptive filter for suppressing impulsive disturbance in audio signals' (Signal Processing, 2025), 'Cross Domain Optimization for Speech Enhancement: Parallel or Cascade?' (IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing, 2024), 'Development of an effective relay communication technique for multi-UAV wireless network' (IEEE Access, 2024), 'Convex optimization-based high-speed and security joint optimization scheme in optical access networks' (Optics Express, 2024), and 'Robust Precoding for HF Skywave Massive MIMO with Slepian Transform' (IEEE Transactions on Communications, 2024). A Senior Member of IEEE, she serves as Associate Editor for IEEE Signal Processing Letters and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems-I, Meta Reviewer for ICASSP 2025, and reviews grants for EPSRC, STFC, and FWO Belgium. She also directs undergraduate teaching and learning.
