Dr. Lucy Richardson is a Lecturer in the School of Media, Film and Journalism within the Faculty of Arts at Monash University, where she also serves as Deputy Director of the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub. Her research centers on climate change communication, focusing on understanding Australian and international climate change audiences and their responses to messaging strategies. She examines media representations of climate topics and explores intersections of environmental science, communication, and social psychology, including audience segmentation, attitudinal research, science communication, and eco-social psychology. Richardson teaches Monash University's Climate Change Communication unit (ATS2324), equipping students with knowledge on effective practices in this vital field. Her contributions extend to public engagement through research that informs climate policy and communication strategies.
Richardson co-edited the Research Handbook on Communicating Climate Change (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2020), a key text advancing the field. Selected publications include "Australian Newspaper Framing of Renewables: The Case of Snowy Hydro 2.0" (with David Holmes and Basil Garas, Environmental Communication, 2022); "Improving Research on the Psychology of Sustainable Consumption: Some Considerations from an Early Career Perspective" (with others, Journal of Social Issues, 2020); "Building community water literacy: Technical report" (2025); and "Climate change crisis communication in Asia: State of the research field and case studies from India, Indonesia, and Malaysia" (with others, Routledge Handbook on Climate Crisis Communication, 2025). As Associate Editor of Sustainable Earth Reviews, she supports scholarly dissemination. In 2022, she received the Monash University Dean of Arts Award for Excellence in Research Enterprise (shared). She was a 2021 member of the Commonwealth Futures Climate Research Cohort, organized by the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the British Council. Richardson's work enhances academic understanding and practical approaches to climate communication, fostering greater public awareness and action.
