About Luke

Associate Professor Luke Burchill is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. A proud Yorta Yorta and Dja Dja Wurrung man, he holds the distinction of being Australia's first Aboriginal cardiologist. He leads the Cardiovascular Health Equity Group at the University of Melbourne and practices as a cardiologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Burchill completed his MBBS in 1999 and PhD in 2010 at the University of Melbourne, and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2007. His career trajectory includes advanced training and postdoctoral fellowships at the Toronto Congenital Cardiac Centre in Canada and Mayo Clinic in the United States, where he maintained a joint appointment with his Melbourne positions.

As an Adult Congenital Heart Disease Specialist, Burchill's research centers on health equity, adult congenital heart disease, and Indigenous health, with a focus on addressing cardiovascular health disparities. He developed the Culturally Adaptive Governance Framework between 2018 and 2021 to enhance Indigenous governance in health research. Notable publications include "Mortality and Morbidity of Heart Failure Hospitalization in Adult Patients with Congenital Heart Disease" (Journal of the American Heart Association, 2023), "Advancing New Solutions for Adult Congenital Heart Disease-Related Heart Failure" (JACC, 2024), "Ethics guidelines use and Indigenous governance and participation in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research: a national survey" (Medical Journal of Australia, 2023), and "Characteristics and Quality of National Cardiac Registries: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis" (Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, 2021). His scholarship has accumulated over 3,400 citations according to Google Scholar. Burchill has been honored with the NHMRC Investigator Grant (2020), NHMRC Award for Excellence (2021), and NHMRC Research Excellence Award (2022). He contributes to public engagement via articles in Pursuit by the University of Melbourne on Indigenous health and systemic challenges, and supervises doctoral candidates including Australia's first Aboriginal neurologist and stroke specialist.
