Luke Gilbert is a Principal Lecturer in the School of Science and Technology at Nottingham Trent University, where he holds responsibilities within the Department of Sport Science. He joined the university in August 2020 as Principal Lecturer for Sport Science at the Mansfield site, with his role later expanding to encompass responsibilities across Mansfield and Clifton campuses, including leadership on Academic Standards and Quality within the Department, oversight of integrated foundation year development, semesterisation implementation, and expansion of the undergraduate Sport Science portfolio. Prior to this, Gilbert began his career in 2007 as a Sport Science Technician at Loughborough College. After completing his Masters degree, he was appointed Lecturer in Sport Science at Loughborough College, progressing to Course Leader and Programme Area Lead for Sport Science, and later serving as Higher Education Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Lead as well as Curriculum Manager of Higher Education Sport, where he led strategic development of student experience and course portfolio, introduced blended and online courses, drove student number growth, and improved National Student Survey outcomes.
Gilbert holds a Masters degree in Exercise and Nutrition Science from the University of Chester and a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching from the University of Warwick. His research specializations include the contribution of Physical Education to daily physical activity in adolescents, the acute and chronic effects of physical activity on cognitive outcomes, the moderating influence of biological maturity, fitness, and exercise intensity on cognition, and school-based interventions that promote physical activity and health. He serves as Module Leader for Exercise and Health in Children and Adolescents and Research Projects on the BSc (Hons) Applied Sport Science, acts as Fellowship Champion for the Department of Sport Science, and contributes to the Department’s Artificial Intelligence Working Group and Scholarship Community of Practice. Gilbert is a member of the Active Collaborative Learning Working Group at School level, represents the Department on the Course Development and Review Sub-Committee and the School Academic Standards and Quality Committee, and serves as the School of Science and Technology representative on the External Examiner Approval Panel. He has chaired course approval events and served as an external academic member on course approval panels across the University. Gilbert is a member of the Sport, Health and Performance Enhancement Research Centre, contributing to the Children and Young People research theme, and the Physical Activity and Health Across the Lifespan Research Group. Key publications include Gilbert et al. (2025) on chronological age and biological maturity in Frontiers in Cognition and Gilbert et al. (2023) on effects of a games-based physical education lesson in Frontiers in Psychology. He serves as a parent governor and Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors at Dove Bank Primary School.
