About Luming

Professor Luming Shen is a Professor in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney. He received his Bachelor's degree in Building Engineering and Master's degree in Structural Engineering from Tongji University, China, and his PhD from the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA. Prior to joining the University of Sydney in 2009, Professor Shen served as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. His academic career has focused on advancing computational approaches in solid mechanics.

Professor Shen's research specializations include mechanics of materials, multiscale modeling, impact engineering, and fluid-solid interactions. He investigates computational solid mechanics, multiscale modeling and simulation of materials microstructures, and the mechanical behaviour of materials under extreme conditions. His scholarly output is substantial, with over 7,225 citations documented on Google Scholar. Key publications encompass 'Ballistic performance of nacre-like aluminium composite plates' (2019), 'Self-healing behaviour of bio-concrete in submerged and tidal marine environments' (2021, Construction and Building Materials), 'Heteroscedastic sparse Gaussian process regression-based stochastic material model for plastic structural analysis' (2022, Scientific Reports), 'CO2 transport through swelling organic-rich nanoporous media' (2024, Journal of Cleaner Production), 'Influence of Parent Concrete Properties on Compressive Strength Prediction of Recycled Concrete' (2020), and 'Damage assessment for seismic response of recycled concrete filled steel tubular columns' (2016, Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration). Professor Shen's work has earned him recognition as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in 2022, placing him in the top 1% of researchers in his field. In 2025, he secured an Australian Research Council Discovery Project grant of $755,902 for research aimed at improving methods for predicting and managing geothermal energy to support clean and reliable power provision. He is affiliated with the Sydney Centre in Geomechanics and Mining Materials and the University of Sydney Nano Institute. Professor Shen supervises doctoral research on multiscale modelling of solid-fluid interactions, microbial self-healing of cementitious materials, and related topics in civil engineering.
