Lydia P. Buki is Professor and Director of Training for the Counseling Psychology program in Psychology at the University of Miami's Department of Educational and Psychological Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Arizona State University, earned in 1995. Prior to joining the University of Miami in January 2013, she held faculty appointments at the University of Illinois and Colorado State University. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Buki leverages her bilingual and bicultural background in her research examining psychosocial, cultural, individual, and institutional factors that contribute to mental health and cancer disparities among medically underserved Latina/o populations. She utilizes both qualitative and quantitative methodologies; notable recent work includes a national survey conducted in Uruguay on factors influencing breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening behaviors, supported by funding from the National Cancer Institute.
Dr. Buki has significantly impacted the field through leadership roles, including serving as Editor of The Counseling Psychologist until 2019 and Associate Editor of Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology. She contributed as a founding member of the DHHS Office on Women’s Health Minority Women’s Health Panel of Experts and served on APA's Committee on Women in Psychology and Board of Professional Affairs. Recognized as a Fellow of the American Psychological Association's Divisions 17 and 45, she has earned numerous awards for research, teaching, leadership, and service. Her scholarly output includes the co-edited volume Creating Infrastructures for Latino Mental Health (2011, with Lissette Piedra), peer-reviewed articles such as “Creating community: Expanding access to psychosocial programs for Latina breast cancer survivors” and “Cultural and conceptual knowledge”: Reformulation and conceptual analysis of a key component of the health literacy model” (coauthored with students), and publications on colorectal cancer screening disparities in Uruguay. Dr. Buki's mentorship is demonstrated by her collaboration with students on publications.
