Professor Lyn March serves as the Liggins Professor of Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Epidemiology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. She is also Head of Rheumatology at the Institute of Bone and Joint Research, Kolling Institute of Medical Research, and holds a senior clinical position as Head of the Department of Rheumatology at Royal North Shore Hospital, with a conjoint professorial appointment through Sydney Medical School. Lyn March graduated in medicine with first class honours (MBBS Hons I) from the University of Sydney. She subsequently completed rheumatology specialty training, earning Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Rheumatology, a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a PhD from the University of Sydney, and Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (FAFPHM).
With more than two decades of experience as a consultant rheumatologist, Professor March has established an international reputation in clinical and epidemiological research on musculoskeletal disorders. Her primary research interests encompass arthritis, osteoporosis, falls prevention, development of clinical guidelines, and assessment of the global burden of disease. She is highly cited, with over 185,000 citations and an h-index reflecting substantial impact, as recognized by inclusion in the Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list in 2022 and 2023. Notable publications include co-authoring the influential Lancet Commission "Osteoarthritis in 2020 and beyond: a Lancet Commission" (2020), as well as key papers on global trends in low back pain risk factors and osteoarthritis treatments. Professor March has received major honors, including appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2017 for significant service to medicine in rheumatology and clinical epidemiology, the Australian Rheumatology Association Distinguished Service Medal in 2022, and the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology Master Award in 2023. Her contributions extend to leadership in funded research projects improving outcomes for inflammatory arthritis.
